The Parasitology Section carries out parasitological, immunological, and molecular diagnoses of the main diseases caused by parasites (parasitosis):

  • Native parasitosis
  • Imported parasitosis
  • Nosocomial parasitosis in immunocompromised patients
  • Zoonotic parasitosis

We work in particular collaboration with the International Health Department, Infectious Diseases Department, and Transplant Coordination of Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, and we extend diagnostic help to laboratories in other centers


We collaborate with the International Health Department and Infectious Diseases Department of Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, and with the Department of Epidemiologic Surveillance of the Regional Government of Catalonia (Departament de Vigilància Epidemiològica de la Generalitat de Catalunya) in studies related to:

  • Malaria
  • Strongyloidiasis
  • Chagas disease
  • Toxoplasmosis
  • Pneumocystis infections
  • Control program for onchocerciasis and other types of filariasis in Equatorial Guinea 


Our teaching activity is developed through:

  • Doctorate courses: participation in the Master in Tropical Medicine and International Health of the UB
  • Sessions for resident physicians (MIRs) in microbiology and parasitology
  • Sessions and courses for nurses and laboratory technicians
  • Undergraduate and postgraduate courses
