The Hemotherapy Section manages activity related to blood transfusion, immunohematology, apheresis, and cryopreservation.
Our objective is to guarantee clinical and diagnostic healthcare activity in our field, providing patient-oriented service with the high quality, expertise, and excellence that characterize Hospital Clínic de Barcelona.
The Hemotherapy Section is organized as follows:
Our mission is to ensure blood product availability for patients treated in Hospital Clínic, in collaboration with the Blood and Tissue Bank of Catalonia (BSTC, Banc de Sang i Teixits de Catalonia). We receive transfusion requests, select and process transfusion products, and perform transfusion compatibility testing.
More than 40 000 transfusions of different blood products are performed per year in Hospital Clínic. This activity requires considerable associated laboratory support, through testing to ensure transfusion compatibility and safety.
Over the last years we have automated most of the laboratory techniques used and have improved our resources for digital registry. This has enabled faster turnaround times and improved transfusion tracebility and safety, all within the requirements of the pertinent quality assurance systems.
All immunohematologic studies derived from the activity of the Hemotherapy and Hemostasis Department are performed in the Immunohematology Laboratory, which also resolves complex transfusion problems.
In addition, we receive clinical and diagnostic requests generated by other clinical areas within Hospital Clínic, such as studies related to fetal-maternal incompatibility, autoimmune hemolytic anemia, autoimmune thrombocytopenic purpura, and platelet transfusion refractoriness, among others.
This area carries out therapeutic apheresis and collection of peripheral blood hematopoietic stem cell precursors and platelets. The therapeutic interventions include plasma exchange, specific immunoadsorption, and therapeutic cytapheresis. This activity is usually carried out in the Unit itself, but sometimes it must be done in the Intensive Care Area because of the severity of the patient’s condition. More than 1000 therapeutic processes and donations are performed per year.
Hematopoietic stem cell collection following donor/patient mobilization enables transplantation of this material, both in our hospital and in other centers. The platelet donations cover the transfusion needs of thrombocytopenic patients in general, and refractory alloimmunized patients in particular, who must receive compatible units from a panel of phenotyped donors.
The Unit has JACIE (Joint Accreditation Committee-ISCT and EBMT) accreditation for recovery of peripheral blood hematopoietic precursors.
In this area, we handle mobilization, cryopreservation, and infusion of hematopoietic precursors recovered from peripheral blood and bone marrow. In addition, we freeze and store biological specimens of great interest for research and healthcare from various Departments of Hospital Clínic. More than 500 freeze-thaw cycles and 600 hematopoietic stem cell counts are performed per year.
Our facilities will soon be remodeled to comply with the strict requisites of environmental safety and enable development of treatments related to gene therapy.
We are JACIE-accredited for activity associated with the hematopoietic stem cell transplant program.
