The Continuing Care and Emergency Area mainly processes samples from Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, although it also acts as a reference laboratory for urgent analysis of drugs of abuse and medications requested from other centers.
The Area operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and carries out determinations needed for continuing follow-up of patients admitted to Hospital Clínic de Barcelona and those who come to the emergency room.
More than 1 100 000 determinations were performed in 2009.
The various point of care testing (POCT) systems, distributed in critical areas of the Hospital and Casa Maternitat, are centrally connected and monitored from the Core Laboratory.
In June 2010, the Continuing Care and Emergency Area updated all automated analyzers in the Biochemistry Area, incorporating last-generation equipment to improve the analytical services rendered.
