Hormones, Oncobiology, and Cytokines

In the Hormones, Oncobiology, and Cytokines Section, we are mainly devoted to determining endocrine substances, tumor markers, growth factors, and cell mediators. The most commonly used methods are manual immunoassays: RIA, EIA, IRMA, and ELISA. These techniques may require preparation steps of varying complexity.
We analyze approximately 110 different hormones, 30 growth factors, 20 tumor markers, and 20 cytokines. The Section also carries out prenatal screening, with early detection of Down syndrome and neural tube defects by automated immunoassays, and runs the Colon Cancer Early Detection Program Programa de Detección Precoz del Cáncer de Colon (PCCCR).

In addition, the Department staff physicians define, design, develop, and execute functional endocrine testing to provide diagnostic guidance for patients whose baseline determination does not suffice. This activity is carried out in conjunction with the corresponding clinical departments of Hospital Clínic de Barcelona.
