This new unit is part of an initiative by the Hospital to facilitate transfer of knowledge from the most advanced research to the laboratory diagnosis. In this case, by merging the knowledge of the Center of Neuroimmunology and Paraneoplastic Disorders in IDIBAPS (lead by Dr F. Graus and Dr J. Dalmau) and the Immunology Department, together with the valuable structural support of the CDB, establishing the Immunoneurology Unit.
This commitment will allow the testing of autoantibodies against neuronal antigens, both surface and intracellular, that provide critical information in the diagnosis of autoimmune encephalitis and idiopathic neurological syndromes or associated with malignancies. Also available is the determination of 14-3-3 protein that provides important information in the diagnosis of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) and the genetic testing of the PRNP gen for the diagnosis of familiar prionopathy.
This new unit is integrated within the Clinical Immunology Section and is located at the Laboratory of Immunology at level 0-stair 4 of the Hospital. It consists of an initial team of one specialist in Immunology (Dr Milagros Garcia) and a technician (Rocío Lara).
This new Immunoneurology Unit is the result of a process of transferring high knowledge and experience to a diagnostic laboratory that will ensure efficiency and effectiveness, extending thus its operational capacity and care to the patients.
